4 Tips to Make the First Day of Daycare Easier for New Moms

That first anxious day will come for every parent when they must drop off their little darling at a daycare center. Your cute, cuddly infant is a grown-up toddler now with many definite ideas of his own. One of those ideas is that there is no way he is going to leave you and walk through that door that leads to his daycare center – absolutely no way. Your brain tells you that all will be well once he settles in. In a few weeks, the routine will be set and he will look forward to seeing his new friends. Until that day comes, here are four tips to ease your pain a little on that dreaded first day.

Tips 1: Don’t leave packing your child’s bag to the last minute, do it carefully the night before.

You are for sure going to spend that first day away from your child pondering whether you remembered their blue blankie, their purple teddy bear or their favorite teething ring. To relieve your stress, pack all the must-haves in the bag for your toddler the night before so you don’t have to rush out the door in the morning with that on your mind.

Tips 2: Thoroughly interview your child’s teacher and the daycare administrator(s) before enrolling your toddler.

When my oldest son started preschool we only had one option within reasonable driving distance of our house (and I was WAY too pregnant with my third child to consider anything that didn’t qualify as reasonable!). Because it was the only option, and because it had come highly recommended by friends, I didn’t interview the staff as well as I should have.

It is a big mistake not to interview the teachers and administrative staff of the day care center to which you are entrusting your child. You need to know if the center’s standards match your own and to know at least a little bit about the teachers and staff of the center. You can do this by spending the time to carefully interview the staff members who will be responsible for your child.

Tips 3: Enroll your child in an institution that has a consistent reputation for outstanding success with children.

You may be new to a city and not know your way around, but find that your new city is teeming with daycare centers. If you check out each facility carefully, you may find that only one or two of them have a reputation of being consistently outstanding. A very high percentage of them will be mediocre at best.

Tips 4: Take the night off the night before and the night after your child’s first day to just spend a little time.

Unless you’ve had friends or family watching them for you up to now, your child’s first day of daycare is probably going to coincide perfectly with your first day of work. You’re both going to be tired. You’re both going to be stressed. You’re both going to need to spend a little one-on-one time with each other. Don’t be afraid to forget the laundry, order a pizza, and just enjoy. You deserve it.
