China reports dwindling new COVID-19 cases, pivots to control risk from overseas

BEIJING: China on Wednesday (Mar 4) reported another fall in fresh cases as its attention turns to controlling the risk of infection from abroad.

China reported 119 new confirmed cases of coronavirus on Tuesday, the National Health Commission said, down slightly from 125 the previous day, in a broad trend that has seen numbers of new cases fall from the middle of February.

The total number of cases on the mainland has now reached 80,270.

The number of deaths rose by 38 to bring the total toll for mainland China to 2,981. All but one new death occurred in Hubei province, the epicentre of the outbreak.

The figures in China have generally been declining in recent weeks as a series of quarantine measures seem to be paying off.

But there are mounting concerns about infections being brought back into the country from other global hotspots.

In total there have been 13 confirmed cases of the virus being imported to the mainland – all in Chinese nationals returning from overseas.

Quarantine measures have been put in place on people arriving in Beijing, Shanghai and southern Guangdong province from virus-hit countries.

Authorities have asked overseas Chinese to reconsider their travel plans, while cities across the country set up quarantine rules for those entering from high-risk places.
